Symphony Field Trip by Helene Ranwez
|
March 17, 2009
The 5th, 6th and 7th graders, "dressed to the nines" in their chapel uniforms, recently attended what can appropriately be called a rousing performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Heartbeat of Music was especially prepared Concert for Young People exploring the element of rhythm in music through pieces composed by such greats as Shostakovich, Respighi, Dvorak, Bela Bartok, Carl Orff, and Stravinski. Also featured was a contemporary composer, almost Atlanta-born Jennifer Higdon. Ms Higdon came to Atlanta with her parents when she was one year old). It was easy to imagine and hear our bustling Peachtree Street in her composition "Peachtree Street", the 3rd movement of a longer piece City Scape.

Assistant ASO conductor, Mei-Ann Chen, her baton waving emphatically, exuberantly led the orchestra in a lively and exciting performance. Aided throughout by two very energetic dancers, she was able to demonstrate and explain to the audience the variety of rhythms found in the pieces performed. From our front row seats, it was fascinating to observe the enthusiastic energy pouring from the conductor's baton to the players, willing them to give it their all... which they did! What a great way to instill in our students not only a love of music but also an appreciation of the skills and work required in such a performance.
