Altanta History Center Field Trip by Belinda Mcdonough

March 24, 2009
Mrs. Keesee took her Kindergarten class back in time to The Tullie Smith Farm located at the Atlanta History Center. The Tullie Smith House is a plantation house built in the 1840’s by the Robert Smith Family. The children had a wonderful time touring the house and the other buildings surrounding it.
They visited with a blacksmith and a woodworker and listened as a tour guide dressed in clothing from the 1800’s described life on the farm. | | She showed the class many items from this time period including a spinning wheel and a weaving loom.
The kitchen is separate from the main house and the children learned that this was common in the nineteenth century. The cook was there and showed everyone around the kitchen as she prepared sausage and cobbler.
The students also saw the type of clothing that children wore on the farm in the 1800’s. The class enjoyed watching as their classmates were actually dressed in boy and girl outfits from that time period.
A favorite part of the day was when the class was allowed to play with various toys that were common during this time. They took turns playing with hoops and sticks, balls and cups, and whirly planes! They also enjoyed making a sachet with fresh smelling herbs.
After visiting with the chickens and the sheep, the class made its way back to the school, not in horse-drawn buggies, but in very modern mini-vans!
